At the rental counter: a one-page checklist
Read it before you get in line. Show it to the agent if that helps.
1. Before you go
- Screenshot your booking total, including "taxes and fees."
- Know what your auto policy and card cover for rentals.
- Bring proof of insurance and any AAA card.
2. Say this
"I'm declining the damage waiver, supplemental liability, personal accident, roadside, tire and glass, toll package and fuel options. Please show me the total before I initial."
3. Before you initial
- Ask for an itemized total, not just a total.
- Every add-on you declined says declined or $0.
- The total matches your quote. If not, ask what each extra line is.
- You may read everything. Do not let anyone rush you.
4. Before you drive
- Photograph the car, fuel gauge and odometer.
- Keep a copy of everything you signed.
- Recording laws vary; Florida requires everyone's consent. Take notes instead.
5. If it is wrong
- Ask for a written correction and a manager.
- Think hard before signing a release that trades a partial refund for your dispute rights.
- Dispute with your card within 60 days after the first statement showing the charge.
