What to know

At the counter, say

"Was this fee included in my prepaid quote? If not, why not, and what is the per-day amount?"

If it was charged anyway

  1. Ask for a corrected, itemized receipt before you leave the lot.
  2. Do not sign a release that trades a partial refund for your card-dispute rights unless you have decided that is what you want.
  3. Send your card issuer a written billing-error notice within 60 days after the first statement showing the charge (15 U.S.C. § 1666; CFPB guide).
  4. Use the receipt checker to total it and draft the letter.

Frequently asked questions

Is a vehicle license fee a tax?

No. A vehicle license fee or recovery fee is a charge the rental company sets to recover its own costs. Government taxes and surcharges are separate lines.

What is the Florida rental car surcharge?

Florida law imposes a surcharge of $2 per day on most car rentals (Fla. Stat. § 212.0606). It is a state charge, distinct from a company's vehicle license fee.

Can I dispute a vehicle license fee that was not in my quote?

You can ask the company to explain or remove it, and you can raise it in a card dispute or a complaint to your state attorney general. Whether it is recoverable depends on your booking terms and state law.
