Toll programs: Toll packages and plate-pay programs

Rental toll programs charge a convenience fee (per day used or per rental day) on top of the tolls themselves. You have to pay the tolls you drive through; the program is one way to pay them.

What to know

At the counter, say

"Please explain how the toll fee is charged: per day used, or every day? I would like to decline the unlimited package."

Check on your agreement

If it was charged anyway

  1. Ask for a corrected, itemized receipt before you leave the lot.
  2. Do not sign a release that trades a partial refund for your card-dispute rights unless you have decided that is what you want.
  3. Send your card issuer a written billing-error notice within 60 days after the first statement showing the charge (15 U.S.C. § 1666; CFPB guide).
  4. Use the receipt checker to total it and draft the letter.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to buy the rental company's toll package in Florida?

Florida requires tolls to be paid, not a particular rental-company package. The package is one way to pay; read the program terms for the alternatives the company allows.

How are rental car toll fees charged?

Usually as the toll itself plus a convenience fee, either for each day you use a toll road or for every day of the rental, sometimes capped. The terms are in the agreement.

What if I was charged toll fees I did not agree to?

Ask the company for the toll-by-toll detail. If the fee was not disclosed, dispute it with your card issuer within 60 days after the first statement showing the charge.
