What to know
- If you decline, you generally return the car with the fuel level you received it at. Refueling charges for a car returned low are typically much higher per gallon.
- The Gas Service Option was one of the add-ons in the Bacon v. Avis Budget / Payless class action (no admission of wrongdoing).
At the counter, say
"I will return it full. Please decline the fuel option."
Check on your agreement
- The fuel option line shows declined.
- Write down or photograph the fuel gauge and mileage at pickup and return.
If it was charged anyway
- Ask for a corrected, itemized receipt before you leave the lot.
- Do not sign a release that trades a partial refund for your card-dispute rights unless you have decided that is what you want.
- Send your card issuer a written billing-error notice within 60 days after the first statement showing the charge (15 U.S.C. § 1666; CFPB guide).
- Use the receipt checker to total it and draft the letter.

Only if you expect to return the tank close to empty. Otherwise you are usually paying for fuel you do not use.
Can a rental company charge a fuel option I declined?
It should not. Ask for a correction. If it is not fixed, dispute it with your card issuer within 60 days after the first statement showing the charge.
What evidence helps in a fuel dispute?
Time-stamped photos of the fuel gauge and odometer at pickup and drop-off, plus the agreement showing the option was declined.
